I think Mark Zuckerberg may have developed a conscience after all the harm Facebook and Instagram have caused to the world. It seems to me that he is deliberately trying to flood his apps by introducing fake AI crap into them.
I probably wouldn’t destroy my evil empire in this way, but to each his own; sometimes you have to think outside the box.
Zuck recently spoke on an earnings call about the coming glut of AI-generated content that will fill social media feeds. He noted that social media has gone through two eras: one with content from friends and family, and the other with content from creators. The unspoken assumption here is that AI content will make up the third age—and Zuck wants to improve Meta's recommendation systems to suggest the “right” AI content to users. Here's what Zach said:
“Improvements in our recommendation systems will also become even more powerful as the volume of AI-generated content grows. Social media has gone through two eras. The first was when all the content came from friends, family and accounts you follow directly. The second was when we added all the creators' content. Now that AI makes it easier to create and remix content, we're going to add another huge corpus of content on top of them. Recommendation systems that understand all that content more deeply and can show you the right content to help you achieve your goals will become increasingly valuable.”
The company already has a TikTok-style AI-generated slop channel in the Meta AI app it calls Vibes, but after scrolling through it for a few minutes, I have no idea why anyone would want to use it. It might be fun to suggest something cool for yourself, but I really don't understand why I would then sit and scroll through other people's pointless tips?
Overall, the Meta seems to be going down a dark path, but it's not as dark as Twitter and others shit show, it's Grokipediaso that's something.
At the same time, good news about Meta is rarely seen anymore. There was even a case recently where a company lawyer tried to hide internal meta-study that found the company knew about the harm being caused to teenagers on their platforms.
To top it all off, while Meta and X are chasing AI, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated that chatbots were not a significant traffic driver in his recent earnings call. This is partly because chatbots like ChatGPT don't often send web traffic to sites like Reddit.
