‘Zootopia 2’ reclaims No. 1 spot at box office, grosses $1B worldwide

NEW YORK — NEW YORK (AP) — “Zootopia 2” It reclaimed the top spot at the domestic box office with $26.3 million in its third weekend of release, the studio estimated Sunday, while The Walt Disney Co.'s animated sequel became the second film this year to gross $1 billion at the global box office.

WITH “Avatar: Fire and Ash” Arriving on a Friday, it was a relatively quiet weekend at the cinemas. There were no major new releases, only Zootopia 2 and “Five Nights at Freddy's 2” to compete for first place.

The lead went to Zootopia 2, which quickly raked in $1.14 billion in ticket sales worldwide, thanks in large part to its massive success in China. There, it grossed $502.4 million, making Zootopia 2 the country's biggest Hollywood hit in years.

The only Hollywood film of 2025 to top $1 billion worldwide was a Disney film. “Using & Stitch” ($1.04 billion). However, the highest-grossing film of the year was a Chinese blockbuster. “Ne Zha 2,” which grossed nearly $2 billion in China alone.

In its second weekend of release, the sequel Five Nights at Freddy's 2 from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions grossed $15.4 million, down 70% from last year. his debut that exceeded all expectations. However, with total domestic sales of $95.5 million, the $36 million production is a big win for Blumhouse, adding another horror franchise to its portfolio.

The most notable new release of the weekend was “Ella Mackay” by James L. Brooke. his first directorial film in 15 years. Ella MacKay earned just $2.1 million from 2,500 locations, making it one of the worst wide-release releases of the year.

But box office expectations were low for “Ella MacKay,” a comic drama about a 34-year-old woman (newcomer Emma MacKay) who becomes governor of her home state. Reviews (22% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) have been poor, and the kind of award-winning comedy-dramas that Brooks has long specialized in (Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News) rarely find large audiences in theaters these days. Featuring a supporting cast including Jamie Lee Curtis, Ayo Edebiri and Woody Harrelson, Ella MacKay cost $35 million to produce.

With total ticket sales this year close to last year's disappointing grosses, Hollywood will be hoping the upcoming holiday corridor, traditionally the busiest movie period of the year, will end 2025 on a high note, according to Comscore. Available movies include Avatar: Fire and Ash, SpongeBob: Search for SquarePants, Marty Supreme, Anaconda, and Son Son Blue.
