YouTube updates video player on TVs to make it easier to navigate

YouTube has updated the clock screen for TVs.

According to the platformThe redesign aims to provide “a more intuitive experience with easier and better access to controls and fewer interruptions.” According to the post, the update moves the video title and some controls. Edge, and adds a new Description button to access author information and other features.

My Chromecast has already received the update; however, it may only be rolling out to certain devices right now and will take some time to roll out to every device, so don't worry if your device hasn't received it yet. After everything the announcement of this feature back in April said it would arrive “this summer.”

To add more detail, the update now moves the video title to the top left corner rather than just above the video slider. Additionally, description and metadata are no longer included in the video title; instead, they now have their own dedicated buttons on the screen. The channel profile picture and subscribe button are also separated and the profile picture now directs users directly to the creator's channel.

To make it easy YouTube now organized all the buttons into separate groups; functions related to the channel itself (thumbnail, description, subscribe) are on the left, and functions related to the video itself (like/dislike, comment, bookmark, etc.) are on the right. Previous, next and pause/play remain in the center.

YouTube says the subscribe button will always remain visible and adapt to paid content, and will also show a “notify me” for upcoming live streams. However, mine didn't work exactly as described, as the button seemed to disappear in the channel profile icon when I was watching a video from a channel I subscribed to.

YouTube also adds that Music and Premium subscribers will also see a new Display Mode control. A new “Multiview” has also been added for live sports streaming, but YouTube TV is not available in Canada.
