Xbox chief executive Matt Booty said former exclusives are crossing the line into multi-platform to other consoles because, obviously, other consoles are not the company's “biggest competition.”
While it might have been unimaginable ten years ago, Xbox has brought its biggest names to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, and hits like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Grounded and Sea of Thieves are now available elsewhere. Heck, even the company's golden trio – Gears of War, Forza and Halo – have made the leap.
But speaking with New York Times before the announcement that Halo: Campaign Evolved coming to PS5 The following year, Xbox president of game content and studio Matt Booty said it was no big deal because the publisher was simply “committed to meeting people where they are.”
“Our biggest competitor is not another console,” he also said. “We're competing more and more with everything from TikTok to movies.”
I understand what Booty is trying explain. Netflix once said that Fortnite was a bigger competitor than HBO, but that's only because we're all so inundated with things to watch online or spend time with, whether it's a new album, a game, or something in real life (imagine!) that it is difficult to provide bandwidth for everything.
Although Booty's comments also come after the recent Bloomberg report stated that the gaming division is under enormous pressure from Microsoft management to generate excess profits, largely due to the fact that it spent almost $70 on the acquisition Activision Blizzardwhat could explain those cancellationsstudio closure and subscription price increase. Arguably the Xbox's biggest competitor is Microsoft.
