Xabi Alonso talks Mbappe, Vinicius, Guler, Camavinga after Getafe 0-1 Real Madrid

Two late red cards for Getafe helped Real Madrid to a 1-0 win at Coliseum Alfonso Perez last night in a game that could have easily ended in a draw.

White struggled to break through the hosts' rearguard, unsurprisingly given the tight defensive lines and low block.

However, Kylian Mbappe's goal in the 80th minute was the difference between the two teams. White regained pole position in La Liga ahead of the weekend Classical.

Alonso press conference

Speaking to the media after the grueling match, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso admitted the game was much tougher than they had hoped and praised his team for overcoming the odds.

“It was a difficult and demanding match. You need to know how to compete and be prepared for a match that is not going to be the most attractive.”

“The team hit the ground running and knew their job. We were focused and did what we had to do. We go into next week with good energy.” he added.

Speaking about how important Vinicius Jr played that night after coming on in the 55th minute, Alonso said:

“Vini Jr has made a big impact. We were talking this morning about how important he can be from the start or later on. He has caused problems for the opposition and pulled cards out of them.”

“It’s important for everyone to know that they can be important, no matter what their role is, and Viney Jr. was important today.” he added.

Although Real Madrid did not lead for long, the winning strike was eventually struck by the usual suspect – Kylian Mbappe – as he continues his stunning season in front of goal.

“We are very pleased with how Kilian is doing. He has been decisive in his goals and in his involvement.”

“Goals bring points, but we need everyone because there is a lot going on in the background.” he added.

Arda Guler started on the bench in the evening but went past the hour mark and made a tangible difference in terms of creativity. The manager praised the young Turkish star for the cameo.

“Arda also had a good influence. We found him between the lines and he found Kylian there well. The goal was decisive because there were saves and it was difficult.”

“Ardagh and Bellingham can play in both positions. They have different profiles. They can alternate and when Ardagh turns and makes a pass in the second line, it becomes decisive.” he added about the battle between Guler and Bellingham.

The coach also provided an update on the situation with Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba, who both showed signs of discomfort during the game.

“I think Courtois is fine, but Alaba had a tight calf and we didn't want to take any chances. We'll check him tomorrow.”

Paying tribute to Eduardo Camavanga's performance against Getafe, given that it was his first start for the club since returning from injury, the manager said:

“I really liked him and in the first half we created a mismatch on the left flank. We needed more in the final third.”

“On this pitch you need to adapt well to the second ball, and the danger was only created from set-pieces. He showed a very complete game.” he added.

Despite being outnumbered, Getafe created a huge chance in the final minutes of the game and only a special save from Courtois allowed Real to retain the three points.

“Situations like this should not happen with nine players. We closed poorly and did not adjust our assessment. Courtois played a decisive role in the end.” the manager spoke about the situation.

“He's done his job and we leave with three points, which is what we wanted. Now it's over, I've got three points and tomorrow I'll start thinking about the next game.” he added.

Finally, Alonso spoke about the big week ahead, especially El Clasico in just a week and Juventus in midweek.

“I'm still thinking about today's intense match. We had to roll up our sleeves. It wasn't the most beautiful game to play or watch, but from tomorrow we will start thinking about Juve.”
