Famke Janssen says Marvel never asked her to play Jean Gray again.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly“X-MenThe star spoke about her role in Fox-era Marvel, or rather, about how she is constantly asked to discuss it. She explained that “every time” she does an interview, Jean Gray comes up.
“It's interesting,” Janssen said. “I didn't realize this was such an important part. Every interview I do will appear, and of everything I say, this will be the only thing that gets printed.”
Janssen first appeared as Jean Gray, aka Phoenix, in 2000's X-Men, and then reprized the role in 2003's X2: X-Men and 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. She also appeared briefly in the role in 2013's The Wolverine and 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past.
“I guess I should be flattered that this character resonated with people,” she added. “It's been so long, but it's nice that people are still talking about her. I'm sure they're doing a new movie every time, like [is it] 'The end of the world?' … it will appear again.”
A Marvel X-Men reboot is currently in development under Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier. In an interview with The Playlist, Schreier revealed that the new X-Men film will be “noticeably different from what happened before.”
“But to be able to explore all the ideas inherent in this rich source material, and at the scale inherent in the source material, is a very rare and fortunate opportunity,” he continued. “It's very interesting.”
