- Workers are unhappy with the lack of empathy and transparency from leaders
- AI tools give them more autonomy and more free time, HP study shows
- Young workers also want more flexibility
Class of 2025 HPThe Workplace Relations Index revealed widespread worker distrust in management, with just 14% of the 1,300 UK employees surveyed trusting their senior managers to make the right decisions (down 12 percentage points on last year).
Workers cited a lack of empathy (86%) and transparent communication (86%), with two in five (41%) feeling their company puts profits before people.
On the other hand, technologies such as AI actually help employees at work by filling gaps left by a lack of leadership and giving them more control over how they do their jobs.
Workers do not receive enough support at work
Three quarters (76%) of UK employees now use AI at work to improve productivity, create content and analyze data, but it's not all about AI. Two out of five workers who say they are happy at work use company-provided AI tools every day, showing that the right tools provide a significant boost to worker satisfaction.
“Companies that democratize access to artificial intelligence, provide training and integrate technology into everyday work processes are already experiencing higher levels of satisfaction and loyalty,” explained HP Northern Europe Managing Director Neil Sawyer.
Three in four (76%) say technology has improved work-life balance, evidence that productivity tools truly free up work time from repetitive and administrative tasks.
Workers are yearning not only for technology, but also for greater flexibility. Four out of five Gen Z workers will voluntarily sacrifice some salary in favor of greater flexibility and autonomy.
Looking to the future, HP encourages employers to focus on three key areas: leading with empathy and transparency to promote open communication; invest in tools and skills to equip workers with the resources they need; and enable hybrid work and autonomy to give workers greater flexibility.
“Companies that democratize access to AI, provide training, and integrate technology into everyday workflows are already experiencing higher levels of job satisfaction and loyalty,” concluded Sawyer.
