Women’s World Cup 2025 results: England reach semi-finals with thrilling win over India

England booked their place in the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup with a thrilling four-run win over hosts India in Indore.

With 289 to win, India were 234-3 and opener Smriti Mandhana was well placed with 88.

But a soft hit from the opener, caught grounded by spinner Lynsey Smith in the 42nd over, proved to be the turning point as the hosts completely lost their winning position.

The run rate picked up and although Deepti Sharma's gritty half-century kept India's hopes alive, the middle order succumbed to the pressure and with 14 runs needed in the final over, Smith maintained her composure and India finished on 284-6.

England's total of 288-8 was set up by former captain Heather Knight's masterful 86-ball century after they started cautiously, reaching 44-0 in the powerplay but crucially keeping wickets in hand.

Tammy Beaumont again failed to make 22 off 43 balls but Amy Jones found valuable form with her 56 before Knight and Nat Skiver-Brant set the platform with a fluent 113.

Knight was the aggressor, hitting 15 fours and sixes in her third one-day international century, and they put England in a brilliant position at 211-3 with just over 11 overs remaining before Skiver-Brant fell for 38.

However, England appeared to be a few runs short as they failed to capitalize on a partnership with another middle-order swing, losing three wickets for eight runs in the 12-ball space.

Sophie Dunkley, Emma Lamb and Alice Capsey had to spin again on the cheap in what looked like it might prove costly when Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur began to cruise through the middle overs, forming an equally immaculate 125 partnership that had the raucous crowd roaring at every run.

Mandhana's knock was stunning and looked certain to eclipse Knight's century of matches, but her one lapse in concentration cost India, who need to win their final two games to confirm a place in the semi-finals after suffering three straight defeats.
