Chelsea Handler isn't just Jenna Bush Hager's friend—she's her sissy.
The comedian and TODAY co-host greeted each other like sisters during Handler's appearance on Jenna & Friends on Dec. 5, giving fans a glimpse into their close bond.
“Finally one of my family members, my grandma Chelsea Handler,” Jenna said. “We've been waiting for you (to come to the show).”
Jenna only has one sister, she twin Barbarawho is she too affectionately calls her sissybut Handler had long since become an honorary member of the family. After Handler described her ideal lifestyle of working about two hours a day and having fun the rest, Jenna started talking about their connection.
“That’s why we’re related, by the way,” Jenna said. “I like it”.
“By the way, people don’t know we’re sisters,” Handler said. “We have a whole whole thing. We are relatives. Barbara is also our sister. We're triplets.”
Handler is so close to the Bush family that communication with the ex President George BushJenna's father, participated in Handler's stand-up routine during her 2023 comedy tour. She now has a High and Mighty Tour scheduled for 2026.
“Are you going to talk about my dad again on tour?” Jenna asked on December 5th.
“I was talking about your father, well, our father, on my last special, so I feel like I'm going to give him a break in this next new hour of material,” Handler said. “I can't talk about him all the time, people will think there's something romantic going on. It would be so strange, because we are sisters.”
Part of Handler's 2023 speech focused on how she needed a little chemical help during a meeting with George W. Bush on the Bush family property in Maine in 2020. shared a story with Jenna and Hoda Kotb on TODAY in 2023, and why she and Jenna call each other “sissy.”
“(Jenna's) sissy, who I also call sissy, Barbara, we all met as sisters,” Handler said. “It’s easier with Sissy, so I don’t forget anyone’s names.”
Handler was living in a rented home in Maine with her sister during the COVID-19 pandemic when she contacted Jenna and Barbara, who were nearby at the family's home in Kennebunkport. She regularly took Pilates classes with Barbara, who one day invited her to play pickleball on the family property.
Handler feared her brash personality might be too much for the former president, so she decided to seek help to tone him down.
“I had to grab a couple of edibles because I was in a situation where I wanted to behave,” Handler said. “It was a time when I thought my personality should be toned down.”
But she ended up confessing to the former president during their pickleball game.
“I had to admit to the former president that I was indeed stoned,” she said.
