The first four seasons of Emily in Paris have been a romantic whirlwind for her on-screen best friends, Emily and Mindy, but the actors who play the characters say they don't want their on-screen co-stars to find happiness.
Many fans of the series are rooting for Emily, Lily Collins' character ends up with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), but the actor has a different take on the matter when asked what Emily's ending should be.
“I don't like thinking about the ending because Darren (Star, series creator) keeps writing amazing storylines where you go, 'Oh my God, I didn't see that coming,'” she told TODAY.com.
Ashley Park, who plays Mindy, agrees with her real-life friend and notes that she was shocked when she learned that her character would be secret affair with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), Emily's ex, Season 5.
“I didn’t even think Alfie would be on the list. I think if I choose one of them, it might limit the possibility of another season,” she says.
Season five ends with Nicholas (Paul Foreman) proposing to Mindy and Emily to break up with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini). Gabriel then invites Emily to join him in Greece. Will she accept his proposal? Fans will have to wait to see if the series is renewed for Season 6 to find out.
However, Collins says she enjoys seeing her character blossom personally more and says the romance is just a bonus.
“I really like the idea of Emily just continuing her relationship with herself and continuing to evolve. And for me this is the most beautiful relationship,” she says.
And besides, Emily and Mindy's friendship is perhaps the most special of all relationships.
“I think Emily is the only ending for Mindy,” Park says.
“I know, I thought about it too,” Collins agrees.
As they look back on Emily and Mindy's romantic journey in season five, Collins and Puck reflect on the direction they've taken in their love lives.
Puck says it was interesting to see Mindy become romantically conflicted for the first time this season.
“I think for the first time, her intuition and her heart and her mind are in different places and she doesn't know how to trust any of them, and she ends up adrift in a certain way that isn't true to herself,” she says.
Park says Mindy is “leading with a lot of fear” and “self-preservation” this season.
“And so I would advise her not to do it,” she says.
Meanwhile, Collins is proud that Emily gave Marcello a second chance, only to realize that she cannot move to Italy to be with him.
“I would say to Emily, 'Good job,' because I think she stood up for herself in a lot of ways and she made a decision that was really difficult, but she followed her heart and respected herself. She also allowed herself grace,” Collins says.
