Stranger Things returned to Hawkins, Indiana after a three-year wait on November 26 with the release of the first four episodes of its fifth season. dubbed Vol. 1. This continued over Christmas when Netflix released three new episodes entitled Volume. 2.
Now, more than nine years later, the hit series, created by twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer and drawing inspiration from virtually every horror, science fiction, fantasy and children's adventure film of the 1980s, will come to a highly anticipated series finale on December 31st.
When Stranger Things premiered in July 2016, viewers were introduced to a tight-knit group of '80s teenagers—Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Will (Noah Schnapp)—who befriend Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a mysterious girl with psychokinetic powers.
Each season of Stranger Things follows the group as they battle a supernatural monster called Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) from a terrifying dimension called the Upside Down. Vecna's plan is to kidnap Hawkins' 12 children to rebuild the world according to his evil vision.
Over the years, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will and Eleven have been joined in their fight by Lucas' girlfriend Max (Sadie Sink) and his sister Erica (Pria Ferguson), Will's brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Mike's sister Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Nancy's ex-boyfriend Steve (Joe Keery) and Steve's witty, platonic pal Robin (Maya Hawke).
They're also joined by a number of trusted adults, including police chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour), Will and Jonathan's mom Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), and rambunctious former journalist Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman).
The group has lost several loved ones, including Barb (Shannon Purser), Bob Newby (Sean Astin), Billy (Dacre Montgomery) and Eddie (Joseph Quinn) – who all died after being attacked by various evil Demogorgons, Demodogs and Vecna Demobats.

The Stranger Things series finale airs on Netflix at 8:00 pm ET on December 31st.
