Acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michelle Singer Reiner, were found dead at their home in Brentwood, California, on Sunday.
Their son Nick Rayner, 32, was arrested in Los Angeles on Sunday. Los Angeles prosecutors said Tuesday he will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Rob Reiner, who was best known for directing films such as This Is Spinal Test and When Harry Met Sally, had two sons and a daughter with his wife of 36 years.
Here's what we know about Nick Reiner, their youngest son, and the progress of the investigation.
What's happened?
The couple's youngest daughter, daughter Romy, found their bodies at their home in Brentwood, a celebrity enclave full of mansions, boutiques and restaurants in west Los Angeles, multiple sources confirmed to the BBC's US media partner CBS News.
The Rayners were reportedly stabbed multiple times. The cause of their death has not been officially disclosed.
Two sources also told CBS News that Rob and Nick Reiner got into an argument during a party the night before.
When was Nick arrested?
Nick Reiner is in custody after his arrest on Sunday, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reports.
He was “in custody for murder,” Police Chief Jim McDonnell said Monday, and remains in custody without bail. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office jail records previously said he was being held on $4 million (£3 million) bail.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Tuesday that he has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple homicides.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, Mr. Hochman said.
Theories about a possible motive have spread on social media. In comments that drew condemnation from both sides of politics, President Donald Trump has linked Rob Reiner's death to what he calls “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”is a term he often uses to describe his critics.
However, the alleged motives for the murders have not been disclosed.
When will Nick appear in court?
Nick Reiner is represented by celebrity lawyer Alan Jackson, who represented disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein in his Los Angeles rape case, according to CBS News.
Nick Reiner was expected to appear in court on Tuesday, but Jackson told CBS his client would not appear because he did not have “medical clearance” to do so.
Los Angeles County District Attorney's spokesman Nathan Hochman told the BBC on Tuesday that “he missed the mark from a medical standpoint.” Hochman later said he would be taken to court to face formal charges after prison officials cleared him on medical grounds.
Rainer spoke about his son's difficulties
Getty ImagesThe family openly discussed Nick Reiner's long battle with substance abuse ahead of the release of his 2015 semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie. A father and son teamed up to write and direct a film about a drug-addicted teenager and his difficult journey to recovery.
Rob and Michelle Reiner said they felt despair during their son's struggles, but when he told them the rehabilitation program wasn't working, they didn't always listen or take the word of the professionals treating their son. He was in and out of rehab centers for years and became homeless as a teenager.
“These people have had such an impact on us. They told us that he was a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them,” Michel told the publication. Los Angeles Times in 2015.
Rob Reiner added: “We listened to them when we should have listened to our son.”
The film seemed to bring healing to the family. Rob said that by the time they started filming the film, their relationship “became a lot closer.”
Likewise, Nick Rayner said Diversity as their relationship evolved through the process. Although he enjoyed working on the film with his father, he added that he wanted to be independent and pursue his own projects.
Rainer had four children.

He met Michelle Singer on the set of When Harry Met Sally, and a few years later they had their first son, Jake.
In an interview with the BBC in 1998, just before the birth of his daughter Romy, he reflected on parenting, saying his approach to parenting was changing and through his experiences with his sons – Jake was six and Nick was four – he was “learning to be a parent”.
That same year, Reiner helped pass an initiative to use cigarette tax revenue for a prenatal and early childhood support program called First Five California.
“I'm trying to improve the fabric of society by investing in children early so that we reduce crime, teen pregnancy, drug abuse and child abuse.”
