The video shows two ICE agents approaching a woman walking through a Walmart parking lot around 9:30 a.m. Someone with a camera begins to take pictures of the agents, and the person behind the camera continues to take pictures. When the woman being questioned stops, ICE agents pepper her with questions. “Are you from here? Where here?” One asks, practically standing in front of her to cut off any means of avoiding their third degree.
The woman answers quietly, but the ICE agent continues the questioning. “Which country? Were you born here?” At this moment, both ICE agents stand in front of her, preventing her from leaving. “Were you born here, ma'am? What country were you born in?” One agent can be heard asking again. The video ends with the woman raising her hands, a gesture that shows she is not trying to be confrontational. After the raid, it was confirmed that two people were detained in the parking lot.
The act was a blatant display of racial profiling, and viewers who watched the video immediately expressed their disgust. “Yes … at this rate, something has to be done. The blatant racism and inhumane treatment that ICE has been able to bring to Chicago is astounding. And this is a city with quite a history in this regard.” says one user.
Some commented on the young woman's harassment, expressing concern for her safety and the safety of other women. “They just wanted to kidnap a young woman” says one. Another replied: “It only takes one serial offender to admit they've opened the door to attacks on women. The crazy thing is they probably won't care anyway.”
