Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in an interview with the publication TBPN he was asked about his views on the gaming industry and stated that Xbox will continue to release games on as many platforms as possible.

“Remember, the biggest gaming business is the Windows business,” Nadella said (via VideoGamesChronicle). “For us, games are on Windows and, of course, Steam built a huge market on it and did a very successful job. So for us, the way we think about games is first and foremost that we are now the largest publisher. [after acquiring Activision].

“So we want to be a fantastic publisher, similar in approach to what we did with Office. We're going to be everywhere, on every platform. So we want to make sure, whether it's consoles, PC, mobile, cloud gaming or TV. We just want to make sure that gamers everywhere enjoy the game.”

Nadella also discussed the next generation Xbox console and mentioned consoles, suggesting it will be closer to the PC business than in the past.

“We want to do innovative work on the system on consoles and PC,” he said. “And it's kind of funny that people think of console and PC as two different things. We created the console because we wanted to create a better PC that could then run games. And so I kind of want to go back to some of these conventional wisdoms.

“But at the end of the day, the console provides unprecedented opportunities. It provides unprecedented performance which I think pushes the system forward. So I'm really looking forward to the next console, the next Computer games.”

Nadella added: “The most important thing is that the games business model must be one in which we have to invent, perhaps, some new interactive media, because, at the end of the day, the competition of games is not other games. The game competition is a short video.

“And so unless we as an industry continue to innovate in how we produce, what we produce, how we think about distribution and the economic model, yes, the best way to innovate is to have good margins, because that's how you can finance.”
