Simu Liu blames the Hollywood industry for the lack of visibility of Asian actors in films.
In a social media post, the Marvel's star Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings shared his thoughts on the lack of representation of his community.
“Put some Asians in literally anything right now. The level of backsliding in our on-screen representation is appalling,” Liu shared on his blog. Topics. “The studios think we're risky.”
Liu shared his views on the industry after reading a post calling for more Asian men to play romantic leading roles. The actor pointed out titles such as until it hurts, Parting, Everything everywhere and at once, Crazy Rich Asians and his own Marvel film as examples of films that did well at the box office.
“Every one of them is a financial success,” Liu added. “No Asian actor has ever lost a studio anywhere close to $100 million, but a white dude will lose $200 million TWICE and move right into the next top three.
we are fighting a deeply biased system. and most of the time it sucks.”
This isn't the first time Liu has spoken out about the lack of representation of Asian actors in Hollywood. In 2023 he responded to the article it noted that he was getting “most Asian roles.”
Liu responded to the Facebook post by saying, “Trying to pit us against each other. What 'most' roles do you mean? Are there movies I'm in that I don't know about? Do you really think there is a quota for 'Asian male leads' that is a zero-sum game? Everything I've accepted since Shang-Chi was published has not been written by Asians. We were able to change the story to get more on-screen representation. Get the facts straight.”
