- Meta's upcoming smart specs have been delayed
- The glasses will be equipped with improved mixed reality technology.
- Meta needs “more breathing room” to complete them.
It looks like we may have to wait a little longer for rumors of Meta's mixed reality (MR) smart glasses to surface, with the latest leak surrounding the device suggesting its launch has been pushed back from next year to 2027.
This comes from a couple of internal memos from Meta executives who apparently saw Business Insider (by using Engadget). It says the release of the glasses, codenamed “Phoenix,” will be delayed to give the company “more breathing room to get the details right.”
Another section of the note says the final product will benefit: “There are many challenges with tight development schedules and big changes to our core UX,” it says, “and we will not compromise on delivering a fully polished and robust experience.”
We don't know much about these MR glasses, but according to sources including Informationthey'll be goggle-style and have a separate puck to store the battery (and maybe some processing power).
More equipment on the way
Meta is now an experienced manufacturer of augmented and virtual reality devices, of course with Meta Quest 4 is rumored to be on the way, although it's rumored to be unlikely to see the light of day before 2026.
The company also has its own smart features, most recently in the form Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses (with a separate neural network controller for your wrist) and Ray-Ben Mea, generation 2 (without display).
It looks like the Phoenix update in the works could be somewhere between the smart glasses we've already seen and the larger Quest headsets – perhaps based on Meta Orion glasses we have already seen in prototype form.
We know from earlier leaks that there are many wearable AI devices of varying descriptions. already on the way — including a wearable device codenamed “Malibu 2,” according to a Business Insider article — but it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer for one of those.
