- Apple releases new video for International Day of People with Disabilities
- This is not your average accessibility video.
- It highlights Apple's wide range of accessibility features.
They are not “brave”, “wonderful” or “inspiring”, but I think it is safe to say that students with disabilities who participated in AppleThe latest film to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) has created an unusual and touching video that reminds us that they are just people, messy, wonderful people.
Throughout the video, which naturally highlights all the accessibility features Apple offers across its product line, including Magnifier on macOS, Braile Access, Assistive Touch on Apple WatchLive Captions and more, we're seeing students using tools like Apple Watch gestures and name recognition (text alerts when your phone detects someone calling your name) to connect with other students and learn both in and outside the classroom.
Despite the message, it's hard not to be moved by the often joyful moments contained in the video. These students, with disabilities ranging from sight to hearing, mobility to missing limbs, sing, dance, navigate college life and show that they are not trying to be special, but just want to do what everyone else is doing. Using Apple's accessibility tools certainly helps. But that's not all.
While the video directed by Kim Gehrig is a powerful reminder that none of these young men are trying to inspire, they may be setting some examples of strong self-determination. The young woman drawing on an Apple Pencil on an iPad with her toes (above) is doing what she likes and isn't trying to demonstrate any special ability, at least not beyond her impressive drawing skills.
Accessibility tools are not ultimately designed to improve abilities; they aim to ensure that students like them can learn, be creative, and socialize in much the same way as students without disabilities.
It's a powerful, uplifting, sometimes funny message and perhaps a portrayal of disabilities we haven't seen before.
As the video says: “
“I’m outstanding only because everyone else is.”
