Voters Give Gavin Newsom Green Light To Gerrymander California

California voters delivered a major victory to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom Tuesday night, signing onto his party proposal to create more Democratic-friendly House seats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

With 26% of the vote, the “yes” campaign led the “no” campaign 62.3% to 37.7%, according to the AP.

Newsom, who will be term-limited next year, called Proposition 50, also known as the Anti-Election Fraud Act, a stinging rebuke of President Donald Trump. Passage of the bill will likely strengthen Newsom's position status like early leader in the 2028 Democratic primaries.

The Democratic governor led a months-long campaign that began in August to redraw the state's congressional map after Texas decided to face partisan criticism this summer. redistricting who tried to catch as many as possible five new Republican seats. The ballot asks voters whether the state should suspend its independent redistricting commission to adopt new maps that largely favor Democrats until 2030.

Republicans control only nine of California's 52 House seats—17%. Passage of Proposition 50 could reduce the Republican presence to just 4 districts in the state, representing 8% of the total seats.

Republican lawmakers who could face challenges to re-election due to passage of Proposition 50 include Reps. Kevin Kiely, Ken Calvert and Doug LaMalfa, whose districts are likely to be safe seats for Democrats.

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa's San Diego district will also become more competitive for Democrats, but the wealthy congressman could self-fund a campaign to fend off a Democratic challenger.

Most public comments submitted to the California Assembly Elections Committee opposed Newsom's gerrymandering. according to to the more than 19,000 comments received by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“We have an independent redistricting commission. Why would you take away what we voted for? If you do that, I will never vote for a Democrat again,” one of the materials reads.
