In his book Life begins where fear endsHost and producer Dominique Arpin addresses a taboo that will undoubtedly resonate with many Quebecers: he is haunted by a negative inner voice that constantly puts him down.
This does nothing to assuage his self-doubt or his “shaky self-esteem”, or the impression that he never lives up to expectations.

“It comes on different levels. There are times when it's more intense than others. Right now I'm hearing it because I'm saying to myself, 'Okay, I need a quicker answer to this question,'” he said in an interview with the show. In the whites of the eyeshosted by Sophie Durocher.
“I’ve lived with this voice all my life,” he continued. “Today I think I've managed to use it to my advantage. For a long time, for me, it was a voice that brought me down and then stopped me from doing what I wanted to do in life. Today I use it as a driver. I want to shut its mouth. And how do I shut its mouth? Being here with you today, admitting that I'm not in control of everything, admitting that we're going to have a good time. I'll shut the hell up, running that day, when my head tells me I'm not a runner and then I don't have the strength to run. It's like a battle I have with this voice. And I also think that playing sports in general has had a big impact on my mental health.”
