A Surrey family is seeking closure and justice after their small elderly dog was fatally mauled by a much larger neighbor's dog and its body was allegedly disposed of following the fatal attack.

“He was part of our family,” Lucky owner Jag Thandi said through tears Tuesday. “We can’t, our children can’t sleep, my relatives can’t sleep.”

Tandis brought Lucky into their home in June 2011 as the first dog for their two children.

“We didn’t choose Lucky, Lucky chose my children,” Jag recalled. “He picked my daughter and came and sat on her lap.”

For over fourteen years, the Havana Maltese was the center of attention in their large home, greeting visitors at the door, snuggling with Jag's mother-in-law and father-in-law, and even sitting at the dinner table on special occasions.

“We just want closure,” Jag said in an interview Tuesday. “It’s one thing that he’s dead, it’s another thing that he’s probably lying somewhere in a bag or something like that.”

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. on January 4, Jag said Lucky left their North Surrey home.

When he didn't return, the Thandis searched the area and obtained shocking CCTV footage of their pet's death.

In one CCTV video, Lucky is seen just meters away from the house on the edge of a neighbour's road before being grabbed by a large dog and dragged into a neighboring property.

Another surveillance angle shows the larger dog tossing the older dog around like a rag doll until he stops moving.

Surrey Police attended the scene but said their involvement was limited as no criminal offenses were suspected.

“Police checked the area, inside and outside the house, and checked their vehicles,” Paul Thandi said. “The only thing they said they found was blood.”

“They said we know your dog was attacked, we know your dog most likely did not survive the attack, your dog's remains were removed from this area by someone on this property,” Jug said.

Surveillance video shows one of the attacking dogs picking up something from the yard and putting it in the trunk of a blue car before driving away within an hour of the attack.

A woman who answered the door of the house on Tuesday downplayed the incident when asked by Global News.

“It’s not a big deal,” she said, before asking reporters to “put the camera down.”

“We need some accountability,” Jag told Global News. “We don't understand this.”

The City of Surrey confirmed the incident was reported to Bylaws Enforcement and Animal Services and the investigation into the fatal dog attack is ongoing.

Jug admits Lucky was off-leash and off their property at the time, but says her family just wants their pet's remains back so they can give him a proper send-off.

“He gave us a lot of love, a lot of good memories,” she said. “We don’t want it sitting in some dumpster or dumpster or some ravine.”

Global News asked the woman who lived at the home if she disposed of the dog's body after one of her dogs attacked her, but she did not respond.

The Thandis said they had asked their neighbors about the fatal attack but said the woman denied any involvement.

“We saw the blood, we saw the video. Where is the body? What did you do with it?” asked Paul. “This is everything we asked them to do and they just deny it and I just want them to be honest.”

“Our dog needs justice,” Jug pleaded. “I don’t want this to happen to a child on our street.”
