Virgil Ortiz Jr. defends his interim WBC welterweight title against Erickson Lubin in a battle of top contenders.

Ortiz Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs) won the interim WBC belt with a majority decision victory over Sergei Bogachuk in August 2024. Since then, he has made one successful title defense, a unanimous decision over Israil Madrimov in February of this year. tournament undercard Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2.

Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) was knocked out in the first round by Jermell Charlo in his only title fight of 2017. His subsequent six-fight winning streak was snapped by Sebastian Fundora in the 2022 Fight of the Year for the interim WBC title. Now, with three more victories, including stopping Ardrial Holmes Jr. in the IBF final qualifying tournament this past May, Lubin is taking another step at the world level.

Interim WBA champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis and his promoter Eddie Hearn will be ringside for the Ortiz-Lubin fight, hoping to call out Ortiz if he wins. Hearn said Ennis has already signed his end of the contract to fight Ortiz in 2026, and Ortiz's promoter Oscar De La Hoya is also committed to the fight.
