Venezuela Raid ‘Wildly Illegal’ Nothing to Do with American National Security

On CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said the Trump administration's raid on Venezuela was “completely illegal.”

Murphy said, “Well, I mean, obviously it's completely illegal. This is a President who has been acting illegally since he was sworn in, robbing the American people, stealing purchasing power. What's illegal now? Dragging America into a war overseas. A President can't carry out a military operation of that size. Can't invade a foreign country without first going to Congress, without letting the American public have their say. America doesn't want this war. Nobody asked for it because it has nothing to do with American national security. And I think that's the most important conversation.”

He added: “Look, Venezuela is not a security threat to the United States. They are not threatening to invade us. There is no terrorist group like al-Qaeda operating there that plans to attack the United States as much as you care about the drug trade. Yes, they produce drugs, but those drugs go to Europe. Fentanyl is the drug that is killing Americans. It doesn't come from Venezuela. Venezuela produces cocaine. 90% of it doesn't come to the United States.” States.
