University ‘excited’ over Indian campus plan

Lancaster University said it was “extremely pleased” to be among a number of UK universities opening campuses in India following the Prime Minister's announcement. during his first trade mission to the country.

Lancaster already has campuses in Poland, Ghana, Malaysia, Indonesia and China.

Professor Simon Guy, who was on the trade mission as vice-chancellor for global affairs at Lancaster University, said India was “moving at a pace we can't find anywhere else in the world.”

“There is a huge demand for high quality university education.”

India aims to become the third largest economy by 2028 and Professor Guy told BBC Radio Lancashire they want to be “part of India's success and obviously bring some of that success back to the UK.”

The university's Lancaster campus, which opened in 1964, has approximately 16,000 students.

Its Indian campus will be located in Bangalore, formerly known as Bangalore, in southern India and could open in September 2026.

Bachelor's degrees will be offered in accounting and finance, management, computer science and data science, with graduate studies planned in the future.

“Expand access”

“One of the questions on any university student’s mind right now is, “How much will my degree cost?” and it has to do with the reputation of the university,” Professor Guy said.

“The reputational value of a Lancaster degree will only be enhanced by our growing global network of campuses.”

He hoped that students in the UK and abroad would have the opportunity to visit different campuses.

“Our goal is always a positive financial return, but that is not the only value we seek in developing these campuses.

“We are sincerely trying to expand access around the world. We are trying to create platforms for research. We are trying to build capacity in the countries where we operate.”
