Universal music group announced its partnership with the tech giant to produce chips Nvidia “the pioneer responsible for AI for music discovery” [per Variety]Universal's latest deal with major labels and AI companies.
According to releaseThe deal opens up Universal's vast catalog to Nvidia, allowing it to use its artificial intelligence infrastructure to develop ways to “create, discover and interact with music while protecting artists and rights holders.”
Nvidia's largest audio language model Music Flamingowhich was designed to develop a “human understanding of songs” that takes into account “harmony, structure, timbre, lyrics and cultural context”—whatever that means! — is at the heart of the partnership, and its way of analyzing “emotional narrative and cultural resonance” is expected to enrich the music discovery experience. How Pitchfork notes that websites run by people with our own emotions and cultures can do this too.
UMG and Nvidia also promise to create an “artist incubator” where real artists, songwriters and producers will collaborate to develop and test AI-powered tools to offer “a direct antidote to the common, 'sucky' results of AI.” I guess we'll just have to watch it!
UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge said in a press release: “We are pleased to establish this groundbreaking strategic relationship that brings together a leading global technology company and a leading global music company in a shared mission to leverage revolutionary artificial intelligence technologies to significantly advance the interests of the creative community and the role of music in global culture.”
His statement continued:
We are excited to embrace the opportunities that AI provides, and the fact that NVIDIA is choosing to lead the technology industry in its commitment to responsible AI is critical. We look forward to working closely with NVIDIA to harness the unprecedented transformative potential of AI to serve artists and their fans as we work together to set new standards for innovation in the industry while protecting and respecting copyrights and human creativity.
Nvidia Vice President and General Manager of Media Richard Curris added: “We are entering an era where the music catalog can be explored as an intelligent universe—conversational, contextual and truly interactive.”
