Stranger Things' '80s nostalgia trip may have peaked in season five with a brief scene in Derek Turnbow's (Jake Connelly) bedroom, a veritable wonderland of toys and games that looks like something out of a period-appropriate Sears catalog. But the key error is in the presentation of the episode CapcomThe classic action game Ghosts 'n Goblins has drawn the (mostly humorous) ire of retro gaming enthusiasts.
When we see Derek's room in the third episode of the fifth season, it includes everything from Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robots to a Hang-On game cabinet with a Domino's pizza box prominently displayed. Derek himself plays Ghosts 'n Goblins on the NES, which is prominently shown on screen during the episode.
There's just one problem: the NES version of Ghosts 'n Goblins isn't showing on the screen. While Derek holds the NES controller, the TV shows the original arcade version with excellent graphics. As you can imagine, there are already V least three Topics on Redditsome tweetsand even Publishing topics dedicated himself to identifying this “unforgivable” mistake. (Thank you, Time Extension.)
At the very least, most of those who complain do so with an ironic, “boy, I really hope someone gets fired for this mistake” vibe. line from The Simpsons. 99.9% of Stranger Things season 5 viewers will never notice the error, but the remaining tiny percentile of us will have some little thing we can annoy friends and family with for years to come.
But what really bothers me is that Derek plays with the NES cartridge lid wide open. Come on, dude! This thing will get dust!
