Uber driver killed, man talks about seeing ‘lifeless’ body in road

The video likely played a crucial role in helping Lawrenceville police made the arrest within hours. about the murder of a man on Thursday.

Channel 2's Corey James spoke with a neighbor who said that his father accidentally saw the body in the middle of the road when he was heading to work.

Hye Lee is still reeling from seeing the body lying in front of his house on New Year's Day.

“It was lifeless,” he said.

“It’s terrible, it’s scary, we’re still in shock,” Lee said.

It happened on Groveland Parkway in Lawrenceville. Ring camera video captured a black SUV pulling up around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

Watch the driver stop. Then the trunk opens and the driver gets out. A couple of minutes pass and the driver drives away, leaving the man on the ground.

But this particular video, recorded 15 minutes later, shows the same car returning to the scene and stopping next to the body that we blurred out.

“This is a suburban area. There's nothing like it here,” Lee said.

Lawrenceville police say a 58-year-old man driving an Uber car was carjacked and shot at least once.

Investigators say nearly eight hours later, advanced technology led them to Hardwood Circle in Lilburn, about 10 miles from the scene. That's where police say they found the SUV and arrested the 15-year-old boy.

“A 15-year-old kid, for someone that young to do something like that, I have no words,” Lee said.

Uber released a statement:

We are saddened by this devastating loss and offer our condolences to the driver's family at this incredibly difficult time. We have contacted the Lawrence Police Department to assist them with their investigation.

Lee says he's heartbroken for the victim's family, who are now starting the year mourning the unexpected loss.

“It's so sad. This is someone's grandfather just working,” he said.

Uber says the driver's account has been suspended. It is unclear whether the man is the arrested teenager or someone else.

Meanwhile, a 15-year-old has been charged as an adult with murder. The name of the victim has not yet been disclosed.
