UAB fires Trent Dilfer: Blazers end failed experiment halfway through the 2025 season

JSC fires coach Trent Dilfer six games into his third season with the Blazers, the university announced on Sunday.. UAB's decision came just a day after the Blazers fell to 2-4 on the year with a 53-33 loss. FAU.

Dilfer was on his way to a third straight losing season for the Blazers. All four of their losses this season have come by at least 14 points, and only one win has come against an FBS opponent.

“We have decided to part ways with head football coach Trent Dilfer,” UAB athletic director Mark Ingram said in a statement. “We agree that, unfortunately, our results on the field have not met the winning standard that we have for the program. This decision will allow us to move forward in the best long-term interests of the program.”

Dilfer leaves Birmingham with a 9-21 record, including 6-14 in American Conference play. In his three years at UAB, he did not win a single road game. The last time the Blazers went this long without a road win was when they were without a football program during the 2015-16 season.

Before Dilfer took over, UAB hadn't had a losing season since 2013. Dilfer's 4-8 record in 2023 also marked a streak of six straight games with the Blazers.

Dilfer was originally hired in 2023 to permanently replace former UAB coach Bill Clark. He came to the Blazers without any college coaching experience.

Former defender in Fresno State and in NFLFrom 2019-2022, Dilfer led Lipscomb Academy, a preparatory school in Nashville, Tennessee. Lipscomb has won two straight state titles in 2021-22.

Dilfer played in the NFL from 1994 to 2007. The peak of his career came in 2000, when he led the Baltimore Ravens to victory in the tournament. Super Bowl XXXV. He was also selected to the 1997 Pro Bowl and retired in 2008 with 20,518 yards and 113 passes.
