One of Canada's top college football players will return to school next season in a different uniform.

Ty Benefield, Boise State University safety star, announced his intention to enter the transfer portal when it opens on January 2nd. The true junior from Vancouver, British Columbia, was eligible to declare early for the NFL Draft but will instead leave Boise State in search of a bigger program to raise his profile among scouts.

The six-foot-two, 205-pound guard was drummer for the Broncos since his true freshman season in 2023, playing in 41 games over three seasons. During his time on the blue turf, he had 235 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, 16 pass breakups and five interceptions.

In 2024, Benefield was named honorable mention All-Mountain West Selection and one of five finalists for the John Cornish Trophy as Canada's NCAA Player of the Year, while helping Boise State reach the College Football Playoff. Although they failed to reach that mark in 2025, the Broncos captured their third straight Mountain West championship that season and Benefield was named the game's Defensive MVP. He was also a first-team All-Mountain West honoree and Cornwall finalist for the second year running.

Benefield began his high school football career at Vancouver College and then moved to Altadena, California, where he attended Crean Lutheran High School. Ty is the son of David Benefield, who played 13 seasons in the CFL as an outside linebacker and defensive back for Edmonton, Ottawa, BC, Winnipeg and Saskatchewan, twice earning league all-star recognition.

The former three-star recruit is expected to show strong interest in the portal and be eligible for the 2027 NFL and CFL drafts.
