Finding comfortable mattress it took a lot of research (and trial and error), which is what I expected. What I didn't expect was the rocky road to finding the good. sleeping pillows. How chronic side berthMy neck can hurt if I just look at the wrong pillow. I spent money on adjustable memory foam options and saved pennies on the Amazon Basics set, a set I really liked until it got super lumpy. As a shopping editor, I'm familiar with a lot of brands and was curious… Alternative set of bun and needle fluff ($120-$140) as a more substantial and allergen-free solution, so I decided to give it a try.

What I Love About the Tuft & Needle Down Alternative Pillow Set

I've been sleeping on these pillows for the past few weeks and think I've found a new favorite. I would definitely buy these for another room in my house and honestly they would make a great gift for the side sleeper in your life. Unlike the more expensive memory foam pillows I've invested in, they don't cause neck pain. They have a fluffy, cloud-like consistency that works equally well for side and back sleepers. They're light and airy, but provide enough cushioning to keep my head from sinking to the bottom—a phenomenon I like to call the taco effect. Unlike real down, I don't have to constantly fluff them to compensate for flattening – they just return to their original fullness after a night's sleep.

Another benefit of down filling alternatives is that they are safe for people with allergies. My six year old is incredibly sensitive to dust mites and regularly visits my bed to warm himself. We can read stories and watch a movie in bed (our favorite weekend activity) without it being overwhelmed. I also love that I can wash them easily, even if it takes a couple of cycles in the washing machine to dry them completely (helpful tip: add a few clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls to give them some fluff).

What to Consider When Choosing an Alternative Down and Quill Down Pillow Set

If you're planning on placing an order, here's a couple of things to note: This set comes in both a standard size (two pillows are perfect for a queen) and a queen size. One set includes two pillows, which I think makes them a great value considering the quality.

Another subtle difference I noticed from my Amazon Basics set is that the body of the Tuft & Needle set is a little noisier. Not that it's distracting when I'm trying to sleep, but I noticed it when I changed my pillowcases. The Tuft & Needle cover reminds me a little of the dust mite and allergen resistant cotton pillowcases I bought for my son's bed, only they are a little softer.

If you're still unsure, Tuft & Needle is offering a 100-night sleep trial, so you have nothing to lose!
