Trump’s Pressure on Ukraine – The Atlantic

Donald Trump continues to pressure Ukraine to accept his administration's peace proposal, even though the plan benefits Russia. On Washington Week with The AtlanticPanelists chimed in to discuss how this could indicate a shift in the administration's international priorities and more.

If the Ukrainians stopped fighting today, “they would have no security guarantees,” says Anne Applebaum, a magazine staff writer. Atlanticexplained last night. Without it, “their country is not viable – because who would want to live there or invest there if they know that the war is going to start, you know, next year, or next month, or six months from now?” Ukraine needs a reason to believe that the war with Russia is “truly over,” she argued.

“The only way to achieve this is to put pressure not on Ukraine, but on Russia,” Applebaum said. “It appears that the Trump administration does not want to admit or cannot understand that the war only ends when pressure is put on Russia.” This is “the most obvious solution to the problem, and they simply won’t do it,” she noted.

I join the editor-in-chief AtlanticJeffrey Goldberg to discuss this and more: Anne Applebaum, Magazine Staff Writer Atlantic; Susan Glasser, magazine staff writer New Yorker; Amna Nawaz, co-host PBS News Hour; and Vivian Salama, magazine staff writer Atlantic.
