“The United States is not obligated to accept foreigners who wish death upon Americans,” the department said. wrote on X. “The State Department continues to identify visa holders who celebrated the heinous murder of Charlie Kirk.”

Action carried out threats from President Donald Trump and members of his administration to use the power of government to suppress dissent in the days after Kirk's killing.

IN one X-postThe State Department shared one of the messages that it found offensive.

The person wrote: “I don’t care about the death of a man who dedicated his entire life to spreading racist, xenophobic, misogynistic rhetoric.”

Kirk was in fact a racist and misogynist who spent his time as a political commentator and activist promoting bigoted causes and leaders. He also promoted right-wing conspiracy theories and regularly denigrated people based on their gender, sexual orientation and race.

Conservatives tried to disinfect Picture of Kirk after his death, but his comments are well documented and easy to find. Being a fanatic was central to his fame and influence.

The State Department announcement came on the same day that Trump posthumously awarded Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor.

During the ceremony, Trump falsely claimed that Kirk “bravely told the truth” at the time of his death.

The decision to honor a fanatic echoes Trump's decision in 2020 to present a medal to conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who has spent decades spewing hate on the radio. Limbaugh died a few months later, in February 2021.

Canceling visas due to dissenting speech is consistent with Trump's efforts to suppress voices with which he disagrees. Specifically, the Federal Communications Commission tried to squeeze Late night host Jimmy Kimmel went off air after commenting on the right-wing reaction to Kirk's death.

After the public outcry, Kimmel returned to huge ratings. Unfortunately, those whose visas have been revoked will not have such luck.
