President Donald Trump on Sunday said his administration's suspension of asylum claims following a deadly National Guard shooting earlier this week could last “a long time” and suggested the possibility of stripping citizenship from some naturalized immigrants with criminal histories.
While the administration has framed the asylum freeze as an emergency response to Wednesday's shooting, the president's comments to reporters aboard Air Force One suggest the restrictions could become a longer-term approach.
President Trump linked the pause to a tougher stance on 19 countries he has derided as “crime-ridden” and vowed he would “absolutely” do so. denaturalize immigrants convicted of crimes – if this is within his presidential powers.
“We have enough problems. We don't need these people,” Trump said, adding that there is no time limit for moratorium.

“We have criminals who came into our country and were naturalized,” Trump said, vowing that “if I had the opportunity to do it—I’m not sure I have, but if I did—I would denaturalize. Absolutely”.

Both members of the guard were deployed in Washington as part of Trump's anti-crime mission that federalized the D.C. police force. Trump said he invited family members of both Guard members to the White House.

Lakanwal faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed during the shooting. These allegations prompted the Trump administration overturn all asylum decisions and suspend issuing visas to people traveling on Afghan passports.
