President Donald Trumpname is assigned to a new class of US battleships that will have nuclear potential.
Making the announcement at an event at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Navy Secretary John Phelan called the warships “Trump-class battleships” and said the upcoming ship, dubbed USS Defiant, will be “the largest, deadliest, most versatile and beautiful warship on the world's oceans.”
Trump's eponymous battleships will be armed with cannons and missiles, as well as hypersonic weapons, electronic rail guns and high-powered lasers.
“We envision these ships being the first of an entirely new class of battleships to be produced in the coming years,” Trump said, noting the eventual goal of building 20 to 25 new battleships.
Phelan said the battleships would also carry a “sea-launched cruise missile with a nuclear warhead.”
The last time the United States used battleships in combat was in 1991, during the first Gulf War against Iraq.
“They've been under consideration for a long time, and it started with me during my first term because I said, 'Why aren't we making battleships like we used to?' Trump said on Monday.
The Navy is tasked with leading the design of the new battleships, which are expected to be ready early next decade. according to the Ministry of Defense. Trump said he would also play a role “because I'm a very aesthetic person.”
