As people fuel up their cars and prepare to hit the road this Thanksgiving, some drivers are worried about road safety.
“I've seen a lot of drunk drivers. I saw accidents happen before my eyes. It definitely makes me nervous, especially when you have kids,” Fresno resident Daniel Thompson said.
On Wednesday evening, the California Highway Patrol said it would begin a maximum enforcement period for the holiday.
“We want to be visible to slow down these drivers. And also be vigilant about those unsafe drivers who cause the most problems,” said CHP spokesman Mike Salas.
AAA predicts a record number of people traveling by car this year. Driving experts say that after a thorough inspection of your vehicle, there are things you can do to stay safe on the road.
“If you're at a stop sign and the fog is really thick and thick, you're going to want to roll down your windows and listen for traffic, right. That will be one of your biggest clues: If you can't see, you want to be able to hear,” said Jonathan Vargas of Learn 2 Drive Center.
When it comes to bad weather conditions, using road reflectors and the right headlights can make a big difference in safety, Vargas says.
He also encourages people not to let anything distract them while driving.
“If you're driving in the fast lane, you have to be careful in case a drunk driver gets on the wrong side of the freeway and enters the wrong entrance. And they'll think the fast lane is the slow lane. So, you need to make sure you're aware of that,” Vargas said.
He said now is the time to give. So, try to give extra space to other drivers on the road. You don't want to get into a traffic accident and not be able to enjoy your vacation.
