It is no secret at the club that Barcelona sporting director Deco has been monitoring the defender market for some time. On the right, Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia have been promoted from centre-back to play there, while on the left the options are largely the product of Balde, Martin and Torrents (Martin joined from local club Cornella in 2023).
There have been times when Kounde and Balde were both top of the class, but as Barca have struggled defensively this season, neither has excelled. This once again forced Deco to consider Barca's options. Sources explained to ESPN that the club doesn't necessarily want to replace any players, but believes there is at least a need to create some internal competition.
On the left flank, Grimaldo is an obvious candidate given his past links with Barca. The Spain international will enter the final year of his contract at Bayer Leverkusen next summer, which should make him an affordable option, always an important factor when assessing potential Barca targets. However, it will still depend on how the club prioritize spending next year as they also expect improvements in the middle of the back four and in attack.
And with the club lacking a natural right-back (although Kounde is pretty well established there now), it wouldn't be a surprise to see Barca move to two full-backs next year if suitable options become available. In addition to the aforementioned Dumfries, Cancelo and Muñoz, ESPN has also previously reported that Deco is a long-time admirer of Monaco's Wanderson, although he is currently injured.
