A 47-year-old Toronto woman died after she fell into deep snow while skiing at Banff Ski Resort on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Alberta RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff reported that just after 3:30 p.m. local time, both STARS and local paramedics were called to Banff Sunshine Village to treat the injured skier.
The woman was in an area of trees and deep snow near the Banff Avenue ski run, a greenway at the resort. Savinkov said emergency personnel were unable to revive the skier and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The exact cause of the woman's death has not been determined, but Savinkov says it is not considered suspicious.
Kendra Scarfield, a spokeswoman for Banff Sunshine Village, said in an interview Tuesday that passersby saw the woman fall into a wooded area with deep snow.
She said the resort's medical team was called to the ski slope on Banff Avenue around 3 p.m. and arrived shortly after. The woman was unresponsive and they tried to resuscitate her for more than two hours, but were unsuccessful, Scarfield said.
“Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends at this difficult time,” she said.
