Toronto looking into allowing Waymo self-driving taxis

Waymo driverless taxis could be coming to Toronto.

As first reported by Matt Elliott in his City Hall Watcher NewsletterThe city is in talks with lobbyists for the autonomous taxi division of Google parent Alphabet. The entry about this is dated November 6th. located on the official website of the City of Toronto..

On that page, the city notes that it needs to communicate “about the potential development of regulations and rules related to autonomous driving technologies, including those related to operating permits, commercial operations, delivery operations, and ride-hailing services.”

Interesting to hear about potential Toronto expansion because Waymo not really widely available in the US The service currently operates in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area and Phoenix, as well as Austin and Atlanta through Uber. However, the company also has plans to expand services to cities such as Las Vegas, Miami and San Diego. and London, England.

The concept of self-driving cars is also still new to Toronto. In May, the Canadian automobile company Magna International received provincial approval to launch a small autonomous vehicle pilot project in Toronto.but city council members were surprised when the project was completed several months ahead of schedule. It is still unclear why exactly Magna abandoned these plans.

It remains to be seen what might come out of Waymo's negotiations with the government. It may have better luck than Quayside, a project by Alphabet-owned Sidewalk Labs to transform part of Toronto into a high-tech smart city. which was eventually abandoned in 2020.
