The Toronto Argonauts are set to hire longtime CFL coach Greg Quick as the team's defensive coordinator, according to sources.
Quick has been with the Montreal Alouettes since 2021, first as a defensive and special teams assistant, then as a defensive line coach and most recently overseeing the linebackers. He helped the team to two Gray Cups, winning one in 2023.
Alouette defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe, under whom Quick worked, is known for his aggressive offensive style. The Argonauts hope Quick can apply a similar philosophy to Toronto's defense.
The 69-year-old's resume includes one season as a fullback at the CFL level, and he previously served as coordinator with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2015. That team finished with a 3-15 record as head coach Corey Chamblin was fired midseason.
The Baldwin-Wallace University graduate previously had two stints as Toronto's linebackers coach from 2010-11 and again in 2018. He also worked as an assistant in Montreal in 2014 and from 2016 to 2017. Moreover, he was first global scouting director of the CFL from November 2019 until his hiring by the Alouettes.
Quick began his coaching career in 1983 at Emporia State University, where he rose to defensive coordinator. He served as an assistant at Heidelberg University, New Mexico State, Western Pennsylvania University in Edinboro, Claremont Mudd-Scripps and the University of San Diego, coaching both sides of the football. He served as a college head coach three times: at the University of Chicago from 1989 to 1993, St. Norbert's College from 1994 to 1998, and Concord University from 2003 to 2008, compiling an overall record of 48–112.
Toronto had co-defensive coordinators last season, with Jason Shivers and Kevin Eiben sharing duties. 3DownNation reported on Friday The Argos didn't bring Shivers back. under new head coach Mike Miller.
The Argonauts finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5–13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Chad Kelly was unable to play the entire season due to a broken leg he suffered in the 2024 Eastern Division finals. Nick Arbuckle threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions to be named the team's Most Outstanding Player.
