Ten Best VR Horror Games
Entering the top ten best VR horror games, have you ever seen a clip from the 1983 film The Twilight Zone with Dan Ackroyd and Albert Brooks? It's a scene at night on a deserted highway where hitchhiking Acriodes utters the famous line: “Do you want to see something really scary?” to Brooks. Brooks agrees and Ackroyd turns into a monster.
Good horror works best when it takes ordinary circumstances and injects something unexpected and frightening into them. Horror works even better when one is fully involved in the story. Until recently, the arena of horror was the imagination of the reader or the images on the TV or cinema screen. Now, from the comfort of your own home, you can take things one step further with VR.
VR and horror go together like peanut butter and chocolate. There is no greater sense of immersion than being thrust into the world of a horror story. Even if it's just virtual. The visuals and 3D audio available with VR headsets, as well as the isolating nature of VR headsets, really immerse you in the game. And horror!
In anticipation of the spooky season, we bring you ten VR horror games from COGConnected for you to try. That is, if you're brave enough!
10 – Into The Radius (Steam, Meta, PSVR 2)
With this first choice we will take you into this horror. Into the Radius is a single-player VR game that combines eerie horror with a post-apocalyptic post-Soviet setting. As you try to unravel the mystery of Radius, be prepared for creepy encounters with otherworldly creatures and lost souls. Still a gem of a PSVR 1.
9 – Here they lie (PSVR 1)
Here They Lie takes the tension up a notch as it is a psychological horror that immerses you in a frightening, surreal world riddled with strange and evil creatures. It's essentially a walking horror simulator. The game focuses on storytelling and the experience of fear.
8 – Propagation Paradise Hotel (Steam, Meta, PSVR 2)
Locked in the Paradise Hotel, you are desperate to find your sister. Explore dark surroundings, collect resources and survive terrifying encounters. This intense single-player VR survival horror game with a great storyline will get your adrenaline pumping.
7 – Ghost Town VR – Legacy of Shadow (Steam, Meta, PSVR 2)
Ghost Town is a single-player virtual reality puzzle adventure game from the creators of The Room. London, 1983. Edith Penrose is a ghost hunter busy exorcizing the city's restless spirits. But after her brother goes missing, Edith must use her wits and supernatural talents to unravel the mystery.
6 – Phasmophobia VR (Steam, Meta, PSVR 2)
Hesitant to play a VR horror game alone? Then Phasmophobia might be a good starting point for you. This is an online co-op psychological horror game for 4 players. With paranormal activity on the rise, you and your team must use all the ghost hunting equipment at your disposal to collect as much evidence as possible.
5 – The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners (Steam, Meta, PSVR 2)
Saints & Sinners is a game unlike any other in The Walking Dead universe. Every challenge you face and every decision you make is YOU. Battle the undead, scavenge the flooded ruins of New Orleans, and face agonizing choices for yourself and other survivors. Live The Walking Dead. Nothing beats the stress of manually reloading a weapon while trying to stay out of reach of a horde of zombies.
Despite my Resident Evil bias, the next three Resident Evil games are all outstanding VR horror games.
4 – Resident Evil 4 (PSVR 2)
Complete Leon's grueling mission as the entire main story can be played on PlayStation VR2. In addition to the knife, you will be able to wield Leon's powerful and varied arsenal, which will create an exciting and authentic look. Given that RE4 is an older game, many of the game's interactions are still done through button presses. RE4 is similar to the Aliens of the RE games. It's an action-packed game that's damn fun to play in VR.
3 – Resident Evil Village (PSVR 2)
Resident Evil Village, the most recent RE game, is the most VR-friendly of all the RE games. When a player defends with his hands or imitates shooting a pistol, Ethan copies the movements in the game. New actions are now possible, such as wielding two weapons: a pistol and a knife, or a pistol and a shotgun. It's as if the player is the controller! The real question between this game and RE4 is which one you'll enjoy better. Personally, I prefer RE4 because I like the story better.
2 – Resident Evil 7 VR (PSVR 1)
While Resident Evil 7 leans into the atmosphere of atmospheric survival horror, it also delivers a new level of horror. Even with the dated PSVR 1 platform, this game is still scary. This is because Capcom can achieve a higher degree of visual fidelity thanks to its new in-house RE Engine, which includes VR-focused tools. Technical specs aside, RE7's story is tense and obvious. The rustic Baker family and their creepy house is the scariest game in virtual reality.
1 – Madison (Steam, Meta, PSVR 2)
Imagine waking up locked in a dark room, with your virtual hands covered in blood. Take on the role of Luca in an immersive virtual reality experience and be brutally tortured by MADISON, a demonic force that forces you to continue a bloody ritual begun decades ago. Are you ready to face the unspeakable horror right before your eyes and complete this sinister ceremony? This is without a doubt the scariest virtual reality horror game to date. The combination of an untrustworthy protagonist, lighting, sounds and jump scares will make you afraid to open doors.
This list is by no means exhaustive. There are many VR horror games out there. Some honorable mentions include Midnight Walk, Forewarned, Hack, Labyrinth, Ovrdark, and Cosmodred. Check them out along with the ten previously mentioned.
Happy fears!
