GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) — Champions Toluca stayed within 0-0 on their visit to Atlas on Saturday but were knocked off the top of the standings on the penultimate day of the Liga MX Apertura tournament.
The Red Devils took first position on the eleventh day. However, their third draw in a row left them temporarily in second position with 33 points, two less than new leader Cruz Azul, who beat Puebla 3-0 on Friday.
Toluca could fall another step if Tigres (third with 32 points) decides the match with Rayados de Monterrey with a victory in another edition of the Monterrey classic.
The tie leaves Atlas outside the playoff zone, remaining in 11th place with 17 units.
The Scarlets had the clearest opportunity to score a clean sheet at the Jalisco Stadium but were unlucky. In the second half, Paulinho hit the crossbar with a powerful shot.
Toluca stifled the opponents in their own half of the field, but could not reflect their superiority, firing five shots on goal.
The Toluca team missed Alexis Vega in the attacking zone, as in the last match against Pachuca he suffered a muscle injury and will not play for up to a month. The Red Devils' regular calendar ends with a visit from America.
The day continues with Saturday's matches between Monterrey vs. Tigres and América vs. Leon.
