ToeJam & Earl designer and creator Greg Johnson has confirmed that a new ToeJam & Earl game is “in the planning stages.”
IN Or to promote their new game on Kickstarter, Dancing with GhostsJohnson also openly talked about his time spent developing Starflight and ToeJam & Earl, and hinted that he is also planning a fifth TJ&E game.
When asked to comment on recent “rumors” that a new ToeJam & Earl game is on the way, Johnson responded: “I can say that a new game is in the planning stages. We intend to bring it to life.
“It will be developed by a third party, and the design will be headed by a notorious and talented producer [ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove]dream [Anthony Napolitano]and it will be a combination of the first and second games, incorporating some design ideas from the original game 2 that were never created,” he added (thanks, VGK).
Throughout the AMA, Johnson also shared many insights about the original development process, stating that “TJ&E just broke free” after developing Starflight 1 and 2.
“I wasn't trying to make something that would be marketable or sell. [Development partner] Mark was so cool. He let me run with anything. Super support.
“We actually had two great producers. Matt Conn was the original producer, and the game would never have been released if it weren't for him. Matt and Nap are both TJ&E superstars.”
Matt Conn founded GaymerX (formerly known as GamerCon) and MidBoss, but stepped down as CEO in 2018. following allegations of sexual harassment, harassment and underpayment of employees. It is assumed that only Napolitano will take on the role of producer of this film.
ToeJam and Earl earned a cult following back in the early '90s when two funk-music-loving aliens crash-landed on Earth. A new Amazon film based on the series, announced in late 2022, was also discussed, and although Johnson admitted that much was “not true.” [his] control”, he confirmed that he has read the script and expects it to be animated, but it “could be a Sonic-type mix since he's mostly on Earth.”
