Tuesday's special election in Tennessee is critical to the balance of power in Congress, Matt Van Epps, the Republican congressional candidate in Tennessee's 7th Congressional District, said during a speech at Breitbart News Daily.
Epps, who is endorsed by President Donald Trump, is running against Democratic Rep. Aftin Behn and explained that the election, which takes place today, December 12, will largely determine the future direction of Congress.
“This is a critical election for the balance of power in the House where Republicans can gain a majority. You know, when you look at the next few months and you see people either resigning and you know those seats are potentially in play, you look at what California does, it could very well come down to one vote,” he said.
“And that's why – one voting advantage in the House. That's why this seat is so important. We got it. We have to hold on to it today because it's literally about the fabric of America. It's about what direction we want to take our country, where we continue to move America first. We're making sure that all the great things happen, lowering the cost of living, securing our borders, keeping men out of women's sports,” Epps said.
“I mean, you just go down the list, and in today's race, that's so important when we look at the next few months and why 2026 is so important for Republicans,” he continued, emphasizing that every vote matters. He went on to say that today every voter makes a decision about what direction to take in this country.
“And we know we will win when our team puts on the jersey and takes the field,” he added.

When asked what Republicans need to continue to do to address affordability, Epps pointed to keeping taxes low and reducing regulation.
“That's very important in this case. … We need more affordable housing in close proximity to the workforce. … I'm a proponent of nuclear power. Tennessee is a leader in nuclear power, and that's what we must continue to do. The first small modular reactor will be built at the Clinch River site in East Tennessee in 2032. We must do this as quickly and safely as possible. This will serve as a model for how we can continue to operate these small modular reactors that will reassure our grid, which is a national issue.” safety, reduce pump costs,” he continued.
“It will make food, feed and fertilizer cheaper for our farmers, lower utility costs. And that's when we unleash oil, gas and nuclear power to unlock America's energy dominance. It's just a key component of affordability,” he said, also pointing to lower health care costs.
“We must have full price transparency and full quality transparency so the consumer can make an informed decision. We must continue to expand Health Savings Accounts. And these are just some of the things we are going to do. From day one, we are going to support our working families, our farmers, the military and veterans throughout our district,” the Republican candidate added.
