Tiger Woods comeback in doubt after seventh back surgery for collapsed disc | Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods announced he had back surgery on Friday for a collapsed disc.

The 15-time major winner had lumbar disc replacement surgery after experiencing lower back pain and said on social media that the surgery had been deemed a success, although it was unclear when the 49-year-old would return to golf.

This is the second time the former world number 1 has undergone back surgery in just over a year, having had lumbar spine surgery in September 2024 to relieve a pinched nerve in his lower back.

Woods X Account Statement said: “After I felt pain and lack of mobility in my back, I went to doctors and surgeons to get tested.

“The scan showed that I have a collapsed disc at L4/5, disc fragments and damage to my spinal canal. Yesterday I decided to have the disc replaced and I already know I made the right decision for my health and my back.

“On Friday, Tiger underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery in his L4/5 lumbar spine due to lower back symptoms.

“The operation was considered a success and was performed by Dr. Shiraz Qureshi and his team at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.”

It adds to the growing list of injuries Woods has had to deal with since rupturing his left Achilles while training at home in March this year.

Woods had not competed since the 2024 Royal Troon Open Championship and had planned to return to the Genesis Invitational earlier this year, but pulled out due to the death of his mother the week before.

His only golf appearance this year was at the new TGL indoor competition.
