- Kobo just announced a remote page turner for its e-readers
- It will be available in most major markets starting November 4th.
- Kobo, however, has not yet announced any new eBook readers for 2025.
I'm an avid reader. Someone once told me that if the average reader reads about 3,000 books in a lifetime, I'll probably read 6,000. I do most of my reading in bed, with my (month-old) Kobo Libra Color on the magnetic lid next to me and my hands tucked under my head or under the covers. And every minute or two I have to stretch out my hand to press the page turn button.
However, the new Kobo Remote could completely change that experience for me.
Yes, Kobo has just announced new hands-free reading capabilities with the new Remote Page Turner, which will be available for purchase worldwide starting November 4th in black and white.
I was hoping for a new reader (Kobo hasn't announced anything for 2025), but I'll take it.
Look, mom, there are no hands!
Remote page turners are not new – you can buy cheap RF units. Amazon easy enough, but most are compatible with Kindle and may fail with other brands. I should know, I tried using a couple with my old ones Kobo Ellipse 2E and with Onyx Boox Note 3 Air and I didn't really enjoy the experience.
The Kobo Remote is Bluetooth enabled and is only compatible with that brand of e-reader devices, but I suspect it may work with other e-reader devices (although Amazon has disabled Bluetooth connectivity in Australia, where I live, so the experiment is ongoing).
If you already have one of Kobo's Bluetooth-enabled e-readers, the company promises “an absolute minimum of movement that could disrupt your reading comfort.” I'm looking forward to this experience and can't wait to try it as soon as it goes on sale. It will cost US$29.99/AU$44.95 in the US and Australia, with UK pricing to be confirmed.
