Owners of Eight Sleep smart beds were deprived of sleep on Monday as the beds began heating up uncontrollably and also freezing in place due to an Amazon server failure worldwide.
Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti reached out to X to apologize for the failure of its Pod smart beds, which cost $2,600 and up, and promised that the company would work 24/7 to “proof” the beds from failure. This fix is already being rolled out, the company told TechHive.
“The AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night, disrupting their sleep.” Franceschetti wrote on X. “This is not the experience we want to provide and I want to apologize for that.”
Owners of Furious Eight Sleep have spoken out on Reddit, describing how their smart beds were overheating and getting stuck in strange positions.”
“My capsule is +5 [above room temperature] and I'm sweating because I can't turn around [it] down or off.” one Eight Sleep owner posted on Reddit.
“Just woke up at 3am because I was sweating and realized the bed wasn’t cooling and couldn’t get into the app.” written by another user. “The side buttons on my Pod 5 don't even allow me to adjust the temperature.”
“It would be great if my bed didn't get stuck in an incline position due to an AWS glitch.” another user complained about X.
Eight dreams Capsule bedswhich can heat up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit on either side of the bed, as well as adjust their position and track your sleep, eventually came back online as the AWS outage subsided later in the day on Monday.
The company's CEO Franceschetti noted on X that “all devices are currently working, but some are experiencing delays in processing data.”
In response to a TechHive comment, an Eight Sleep spokesperson said the company has just released a “Shutdown Access” feature that allows the Eight Sleep app to “talk directly to your module when cloud infrastructure is not available,” meaning users will be able to “open the app, turn the module on/off, change temperature levels and equalize base” during future cloud outages.
Eight Sleep Smart Bed Confusion Caused by AWS Happened previously reported by Dextero.
Monday's Amazon outage exposed the vulnerabilities of many cloud-connected smart home devices, some of which failed completely during the AWS outage.
Amazon Ring and Blink security cameras have been taken offlineFor example, there have been other reports of smart technologies that have lost connectivity to the cloud, rendering them useless.
Of course, it's one thing for Ring cameras to be temporarily blinded during a cloud outage; It's a different story when your smart bed starts overheating or gets stuck in an upright position, ruining your night's sleep.
It's good to know that Eight Sleep has been quick to roll out its autonomous functionality, and we hope other smart bed makers in the same situation will follow suit.
