Modern routers are considered secure Internet access points, but they are also repeatedly used for attacks. Hackers could, for example, hijack routers to silently create a botnet and use it to further attack networks and service providers.
Owners of some Asus routers are currently at risk. This is due to the fact that the manufacturer discovered a security vulnerability in DSL-AS51, DSL-AS750 And DSL-N16 models, which creates a high risk of external takeovers.
It is unknown whether the vulnerability is already being exploited. However, it's best not to take any risks, since a compromised router can also be used as a gateway to take control of other devices on your home network and intercept sensitive data.
How to protect yourself
Asus has already provided firmware update number 1.1.2.3_1010 for the affected routers. You can get this through the appropriate download page (find your specific model here) or through the Asus Router app. It's best to install it directly to close the security hole.
Changing the password for your router won't do any harm either. This way you can be on the safe side if the update is already too late. It's best to install new firmware updates as soon as they become available for better protection against the latest threats.
If your router is so old that it has reached the end of support and therefore no longer receives security updates, it may be worth purchasing a new model.
