- Gemini will take longer to cover all Android devices
- After this, Google Assistant will stop working.
- A specific date of 2026 is not mentioned.
You may remember this back in March, Google stated that its shiny new app Gemini AI will replace Google Assistant on Android devices by the end of 2025. In a new update, Google says the process will continue into 2026.
Latest announcement (by using 9to5Google) explains that the previous schedule will be adjusted to allow for a “smooth transition” between the old AI and the new AI, and that more details will be revealed in the coming months.
There is no specific extension date, all we know is that work will continue “until 2026.” We don't receive any mention of specific devices still awaiting the transition, or any specific bugs that need to be fixed.
Of course, on new devices such as Google Pixel 10 there's only Gemini and no sign of Google Assistant, but on many older devices you can still run both of these AI apps and switch between them for different tasks.
Technical problems
When the transition is finalized next year, Google Assistant will stop working on all Android phones and tablets and will no longer be available for download. From now on, Google Assistant should be available to everyone.
As you may have noticed, this process happens on all other devices and platforms. It looks like Gemini will be the default assistant for everyone on Android Auto. by March 2026For example.
Google is also busy transitioning all of its smart home devices to Gemini, with gadgets released 10 years ago being eligible for replacement. This won't work just as smooth as Google would like, this is a sign of how technically difficult all this is to do.
The difficulties Google has had with its smart home devices may have contributed to the delay with Android as well. If you're still using Google Assistant on your Android phone or tablet, you'll be able to continue doing so for a little while longer.
