The Royal Canadian Legion names Canada’s 2025 National Silver Cross Mother – The Canadian Business Journal

OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Royal Canadian Legion is proud to present Ms. Nancy Payne of Lansdowne, Ontario as National Silver Cross Mother. On November 11, Nancy will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

“Nancy’s profound loss reflects the pain of many,” said Berkeley Lawrence, Dominion President. “Her courage in sharing her story sheds a warm light on her son, who gave his life for this country. We will always remember him.”

Ms. Payne's son, Corporal Randy Joseph Payne, served in the Canadian Army with the 1st Garrison Military Police Company based in Wainwright, Alberta. He began his career first with the Royal Canadian Air Force Military Police.

Randy was killed in action in Afghanistan on April 22, 2006, while serving with the Close Protection team assigned to this mission. He was killed along with three other soldiers when a roadside bomb hit the military G-Wagon they were driving back to Kandahar airfield from their base of operations.

The Mother of the National Silver Cross acts on behalf of all Canadian mothers and families who have lost a son or daughter in the line of duty. From November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2026, Mrs. Payne will participate in several events in honor of Canada's Fallen.

Memorial cross – better known as the Silver Cross – was introduced on December 1, 1919. It is a symbol of personal loss and sacrifice on behalf of widows and mothers who have lost a child in the line of duty or whose death was later attributed to such duty.

The Royal Canadian Legion is nominated each year for the role of Mother of the National Silver Cross by provincial commanders and individual Canadians. The final recipient is selected by a Dominion Command selection committee.
