It's been a long and strange journey for People's Jokera DC satire directed by Vera Drew that uses superhero tropes and characters to explore the transgender experience. The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, but all subsequent screenings have been cancelled. canceled after Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly filed a copyright infringement lawsuit.
This only fueled interest in the mash-up parody, which premiered again at the 2023 Los Angeles Outfest Film Festival and then received a limited theatrical release in 2024. People's Joker also streaming on Mubi, a subscription streaming service for independent and international films, from 2024. But now Drew's superhero premise will reach its widest audience yet, as the film is set to hit Tubi sometime in January.
This became known in one of the episodes of the program. Mix and playA Magic: Gathering The YouTube show is broadcast on the popular Tolarian Community College channel. In this episode, Drew joined three other Magic players in the game and took advantage of the opportunity to advance People's JokerArrival at Tubi. While the film is not yet available on the ad-supported free streaming service, Polygon has confirmed to Tubi that the film will premiere on January 21st.
This is more good news for the little movie that could. We were big fans People's Joker after that infamous TIFF screening, and enjoyed chatting with Drew over the years. The film was a major step forward in both upending pop culture icons and, in Drew's opinion, creating a transgender film that tells a real story about real people. As she told Polygon in 2024:
“If you're watching a movie like this, where there's a very clear protagonist, I take over your brain for 92 minutes and make you look inside mine. So don't you want someone to change and grow? Don't you want someone who starts out as a villain and then either becomes an even bigger villain, becomes a hero by the end, or hovers somewhere in the middle throughout? That's what storytelling is. This is what myth-making is. I understand this feeling. Representation is important, but I think the best way to properly represent transgender people is to treat them as people in the film, not as perfect angels or disgusting perverts.”
Update: Following publication, Tooby contacted Polygon to confirm People's JokerThe streaming release date is January 21st. We have updated the original story with this information.
