For mobile gamers, there are no better games than iOS.
Although almost all of best gaming phones Android phones, AppleThe company's mobile platform offers the best selection of big-budget games, console ports and creative original mobile games. Moreover, Apple arcade is several leagues above Google Play Pass due to the careful selection and quality of games offered.
I grew up in the early days of the iPhone, and my gaming console back then was often the iPod Touch or its successor, the iPhone 5S: I've always found iOS to be a unique home for some truly excellent games.
This is more true today than ever. iOS and iPadOS are the only mobile devices operating systems with the right selection of console games – I say Assassin's Creed: Shadows, Death, Sniper Elite 4Control and Remake of Resident Evil 4among others. We've come a long way since the days when Jetpack Joyride was the hottest game on the App Store (although the endless scroller Halfbrick is still great).
And just recently, iOS 26 and with iPadOS 26, Apple finally brought a dedicated Games app and Game Mode overlay to iPhone and iPad with special controls and gameplay optimizations. To me, this suggests a renewed and open commitment to iOS as a gaming platform, which makes me wonder what could be next.
The intrigue about the foldable iPhone
According to all credible news sources, whistleblowers and rumor aggregators, Apple is working on foldable iphone.
What's more, it could be a real oddity: a wide iPad mini-style display and a squat, passport-style screen. The latest rumors point to an internal screen measuring around 7.7 inches and an approximate aspect ratio of 14:10.which is only slightly squat than the iPad mini's 3:2 aspect ratio panel.
Most best folding phones – at least those in the booklet form factor – tend to mimic typical tablet phone displays with their cover screens and large, square internal display, so this suggests Apple may be taking a different approach.
These basic folding, booklet-style phones are great for reading, multitasking, and taking photos and videos, but aren't very well suited for some games—especially console games originally designed for TVs and monitors, or first-person games that rely on the player having a wide field of view. I'm sure Call of Duty Mobile runs well Samsung Galaxy Z Foldable 7but you'll be at a practical disadvantage if you use the internal display on top of a wider screen due to the squeezing of the field of view.
A wider foldable screen, a powerful A-series chipset, and a larger battery capacity could make the foldable iPhone a great mobile gaming machine. With a screen size of around 7.7 inches, it is rumored to have a display size similar to Nintendo Switch 2 folding to a size slightly larger than Samsung Galaxy Z flip 7. It's a combination of power and portability that other gaming phones (almost always slabs with large screens) can't match.
Huawei is one step ahead
Naturally, we can look at China and see that this general concept has already been tried. Huawei released the Pura X earlier this year, around the time iPhone Fold rumors started heating up. The Pura X features a 6.3-inch internal display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a square 3.5-inch display.
Since the Pura X is exclusive to China, I haven't had a chance to get hands-on with it, but I'm appreciating its styling from afar. The key here is the internal display, which with a 16:10 aspect ratio is well suited for gaming, so this type of form factor combined with iOS's excellent selection of games could make for a really tempting combination.
I don't expect Apple to focus its supposed foldable iPhone on gaming – in fact, I expect any foldable Apple phone to be aggressively marketed as a general-purpose device, as opposed to SamsungFocus on performance and productivity. I just hope Apple chooses a weird and wide design to maximize the gaming potential of this speculative phone.
